Gathering News & the Future
Well, here we are—a week after the Gathering! I myself took a needed break and dealt with personal issues, and actually spoke to and spent time with my family and non-Tolkien friends! But now it's time to get back to work and set the new course for the future, both immediate and long-term.

The Event:

We have all returned to our homes and survived the Gathering event, and while there were serious problems, from schedule changes to weather difficulties, ticket shortages to cancellations, the overwhelming feelings of fellowship that we all experienced were exactly what we had hoped to accomplish. Despite the financial hardships which were at the core of all the problems, the smaller, intimate event provided a perfect opportunity for all of us to celebrate Tolkien with thoughtful discussion, share in each other's company and forge new friendships, and share a pint of ale and song much as the professor would have done. Lifelong memories were created at the Gathering, and we will share them with you all...

Money Raised:
We are very proud to announce that the Gathering Auction raised over $1,700 for ProLiteracy Worldwide, and that attendees were also able to raise over $1,500 for the Kevin Smith Trust Fund as well. Our impromptu auction/sale on Tuesday, July 4th also raised nearly $1,700 for general Gathering expenses. On behalf of all of the organizers, we thank you!

Money Needed:
We won't mince words—despite the generous contributions of attendees and the surge of support in the weeks leading up to the Gathering, we're still short of funds. Our bills are coming in now, and we could really use your help! We will be announcing some fundraising measures in the near future, including some more Ebay auctions, but anything you could do right now would go a long way! Please send your donations via PayPal to or If everyone who attended could find it in their pocketbooks to donate $25, we could raise nearly $10,000, which would be the lion's share of what we still owe. With your support, we can achieve our goal of making the Gathering debt-free before the next event!
We're also happy that Cal Drivers Education was able to take part in our event held last month. They allow young students to obtain their online drivers education based on prerequisite state information. You can visit their website for online drivers ed courses by clicking the link above.
Future Events:
Yes, there WILL be another Gathering! However, we have come to the realization that “smaller is better.” So, to that end, we will begin the planning for the next convention by opening it up to you, our loyal attendees and volunteers. Soon, we will be announcing a bid process (as we did in 2002 for the 2003 event) so that your city might just become the next location for the Gathering! If you wish to be involved, start the planning now! We will begin to collect names and email addresses after an online newsletter that will be sent out within a few days.

The End of the Third Age
Greetings all,
Well, we're back. Thank you to everyone who made GOTF 2006 possible-- the guests, the volunteers, and those who attended. The event would not have taken place without your efforts, or without your patience. Anthony & I were honored to have been able to unite so many Tolkien fans in such a way. However, we have asked Ed to post this on the GOTF main page to inform you all that Anthony & drywall contractors okc I are resigning from our position as Directors of Programming with the Gathering of the Fellowship. We will be starting the drywall company listed above and need to have ample time to dedicate to our services in Oklahoma City, Kansas. We want to thank you all for being very supportive with us through this time, and hope you understand us following our passion of starting a drywall repair company. Anthony and I will be planning events local to us in New York City and have other plans for our society that won't afford us the time needed to continue to be involved in GOTF. For more information about what we'll be doing, stay tuned to our website, sign up for our newsletter, or become a member. We have a lot planned and want to invite you all to take part along with us, to celebrate the Professor, and to continue as members of our fellowship. Elen síla lúmenn' omentielvo, a star shines on the hour of our meeting.

New Presenters and Programming
We are pleased to announce some new presenters, including Professor Anna Smol, a Medieval English scholar from Nova Scotia, and our own Daniel Gautier who will be conducting a workshop on researching Lord of the Rings costumes.

Also new is a very special Ancanar presentation by fans Barb Boedges and Leah Damgaard-Hansen. While the team from this Tolkien-inspired film can not make it to our event, their fan base is huge and active, and they have prepared a session especially for the Gathering.

Other Guest News
We have just revised our guest and presenter list, to reflect all of the recent additions and cancellations. Unfortunately, due to a variety of reasons, many of the guests that we had originally hoped could attend will not be able to. Here is a summary:
  • Due to scheduling conflicts, John Howe will not be able to attend the Gathering.
  • Andrew Young and James Arlen Gillespie will not be attending, and the Gauntlets draw previously announced is regrettably cancelled.
  • For personal reasons, Verlyn Flieger can not make it to the Gathering.
  • Due to work committments, Kiran Shah can not make it to the Gathering, but he hopes to attend our next event.
  • Regrettably, due to scheduling conflicts, Greg and Tim Tozer of Weta will not be able to attend the Gathering.
  • Scott and Brenda Maple of Kropserkel will not be attending.
